The Three Mindset Traps That Take Down Even the Best People
You can have all the discipline in the world and still lose to one of these three.
I call them the ABCs. Apathy, Burnout, and Complacency. They are different in how they show up, different in what causes them, and different in how you get out. But they share one thing in common: they are all quiet. None of them announce themselves. They move in slowly while you are focused on everything else.
Apathy is the loss of caring. It is not laziness. Lazy people never cared to begin with. Apathy hits people who did care, deeply, and who cared long enough without enough return that they stopped. The tell is going through the motions. Showing up physically while checking out mentally.
Burnout is exhaustion that compounds. It is what happens when a high performer runs at full capacity for too long without recovery. Burnout does not hit average performers. It hits the ones who refuse to stop, who take on more than they should, who believe that pushing through is always the answer.
Complacency is the most dangerous because it feels like success. You stop pushing because you have already arrived. Except the world did not stop moving while you were coasting.
Each one has a way out. I cover all three in Chapter 9 of Expect to Win.
